MUSIC AND PERFORMING ARTS PHD PROGRAM

 

Academic Unit: Department of Arts

Program Objectives: Music and Performing Arts PhD Program is designed as an interdisciplinary program by the Faculty of Arts and Design. It is based on the mission of opening a field for PhD candidates who can produce qualified works with the aim of bringing performance and theory together in accordance with academic criteria, with the guidance of competent faculty members and prominent academics. In accordance with this mission, the aim of the program is the creation of an enriched thesis/ project content, an expanded perspective and awareness; qualities such as openness, authenticity, and communicability, and above all, awareness of academic ethics in each study to be produced.

Portfolio

Applicants should prepare a portfolio which includes:

  • Samples of professional and academic works and documents
  • A thesis proposal (Include your aim in selecting the topic, sources you would use and publication possibilities of your thesis, etc.)

In-Field Quotas

BA and MA degree holders of Music, Music Teaching programs should apply to in-field applicant quotas.

Out-of-Field Quotas

Any applicant who is not a graduate of the programs listed above can apply to out-field quotas. Preparatory Class in Music and Performing Arts is required for out-of-field students.

Graduation Requirements:

In order to graduate from this program;

  • Students who were admitted to the PhD program with an MA degree are required;
    • to take at least 7 courses (21 local credits/ 240 ECTS), two of which are required by the department,
    • to take Seminar and Research Methods and Scientific Ethics courses,
    • to pass all courses with at least BB grade and have at least 3.0/4.0 GPA,
    • to pass the PhD Qualifying Exam, to submit a thesis proposal and 3 thesis follow-up reports,
    • to comply with the publication requirement,
    • to pass the PhD thesis defense successfully,
  • Students who were admitted to the PhD program with a BA degree are required;
    • to take at least 14 courses (42 local credits/ 300 ECTS), two of which are required by the department,
    • to take Seminar and Research Methods and Scientific Ethics courses,
    • to pass all courses with at least BB grade and have at least 3.0/4.0 GPA,
    • to pass the PhD Qualifying Exam, to submit a thesis proposal and 3 thesis follow-up reports,
    • to comply with the publication requirement,
    • to pass the PhD thesis defense successfully.

 

PhD Publication Requirement: PhD students are required to make both of the following publications related to their thesis in cooperation with their thesis supervisors:

a) An oral presentation at a national/ international refereed academic congress

b) At least one article published or accepted for publication at a national/ international refereed academic journal
